Supporting the Metal Element - Autumn & Lung Season in Chinese Medicine

As autumn arrives on the West Coast, nature begins to slow down. The air turns cooler, the leaves fall, and the landscape invites us to let go of what we no longer need.

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), autumn is connected to the Metal Element, associated with the Lungs and Large Intestine. Metal reminds us of the importance of breathing, creating space, and finding a healthy balance between holding on and letting go.

The Metal Element in the Body

The Lungs are associated with breathing, energy, and our connection with the outside world. The Large Intestine supports elimination, helping the body release what it no longer needs.

Together, they reflect a simple but powerful rhythm: receiving and releasing.

When the Metal Element feels balanced, we may experience clarity, healthy boundaries, and a sense of openness. When we feel out of balance, we might notice shallow breathing, dry skin, rigidity, or difficulty processing grief and change. In TCM, these are traditional associations rather than medical diagnoses.

How to Support Your Metal Element

Breathe and slow down. Take a few moments each day to breathe deeply and consciously. Gentle movement, fresh air, and time outdoors can help you reconnect with your body.

Make space to let go. Autumn is a natural time to release old habits, clear clutter, and reflect on what you’re ready to leave behind. Letting go doesn’t mean forgetting; it means making room for what comes next.

Keep yourself warm. Protect your neck, chest, and upper back from cold wind by using a cozy shawl and choose comforting activities that support rest and relaxation.

Nourish yourself with seasonal foods. Pears, root vegetables, oats, rice, soups, and broths can be lovely choices as the weather cools. Ginger, onion, leek, garlic, and other warming and pungent ingredients can bring extra comfort and help aid digestion and support immune system. In Five Element theory, the Metal Element is also associated with the colours white, grey, and metallic tones - a reflection of clarity, simplicity, and space.

Finding Balance Through the Metal Element

Autumn invites us to pause, breathe, and soften our grip on the things we can no longer carry. Sometimes, the most supportive thing we can do is create a little more space - in our homes, our minds, and our bodies.

At ZenThai, bodywork offers an opportunity to slow down, release tension, and reconnect with yourself through mindful touch and movement.
